This is the doll i wish to add patterns to. Remember to have two copies of the doll. Place one of the copy somewhere on paint board so you can use it later

Now i have placed the pattern i wish to use on top of the area where i want the pattern to be in.

Erase away all the areas where you don't want the pattern to be in (this include details) Then you should re-draw back the outline of the dress (remove those patterns that overlap the dress outline)

Remember the doll you copy+paste to another place. ^^ now get it back and place your patterned dress on top of the doll.

to highlight patterns instead of highlighting it one by one (you can do it if you want 0.o but it gets pretty tiring) Click on the eraser tools then click on colour picker and pick the colour your patterns is currently in and then right click on the colour you wish to change your current colour into. Then just right-click your mouse and run over the patterns to highlight it (follow the dress highlight as a guide)
